Our Mission:

As a non-profit group, we provide a dinner of turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy, stuffing, rolls, Jello, etc., all of which are graciously donated by generous businesses in and around the lake area. Santa & Mrs. Claus will arrive with presents exclusively for those with special needs! There will also be clowns, live music, dancing, lots of holiday cheer and fun for all!

A Brief History:

The original idea for the "True Meaning of Christmas" celebration began about 32 years ago by Bill Rosser Sr. at the General's Inn in Independence Mo, where it is still going strong.

About 20 years ago, Sharon Matheson moved to the Lake area and drove her family to Independence every Christmas day to attend the special party. That is how her children grew up, being part of an even larger and loving family. Then, about 5 years ago, Sharon told some of her friends about the celebration going on in Independence. They all agreed that this celebration should be part of the Lake community. Sharon teamed up with Jenny Payne and The "Christmas Angels" had their first celebration in 2003. With help from volunteers and donations from all around the lake area, the "Christmas Angels" brought love & joy to 97 physically and mentally challenged friends that first year.

The initial celebration was a huge hit with the community, but also had a deeply profound and lasting impact on the "Christmas Angels" and all that volunteered. Their lives would never be the same again. Sharon puts it like this, "Once you do this, you all become family, and who do you spend Christmas with? Your Family! The joy in their hearts and smiles on their faces is our Christmas. This is the true meaning of Christmas!"

Last year, there were over 200 physically and mentally challenged friends and 45 volunteers. Donations came in the form of cash, food, toys and entertainment, from both generous businesses and caring individuals. Because of its growing success, the "True Meaning of Christmas" celebration still needs YOUR help to continue bringing joy to our physically and mentally challenged friends.
